Experience the whole scale of the landscape of Swedish Lapland! A true dog sledding adventure starting at Saltoluokta Mountain Lodge and running over the bare mountains down to the snow covered woodlands of Jokkmokk.

This is one of our favorite routes and the same tour as the Crossing Lapland with dog sled but reversed. You will be dog sledding through the diverse nature we have up here in the north and experience impressive mountain views, mountain birch forests, frozen moorlands, lakes and rivers and old virgin pine forests.

The first days are spent along the King´s Trail – Kungsleden, in comfortable mountain cabins and then we’ll reach Årrenjarka Mountain Lodge, owned by the Mannberg family living in this remote place in generations. Here we will get the luxury of getting a warm shower before we will served a delicious dinner in the beautiful restaurant.
After refreshed in Årrenjarka we will be sledding down through the deep woodlands. Small, simple but cozy timber huts will give us shelter for the nights before we will reach our kennel down in Jokkmokk.

As on all our tours we all work as a team and you will help out with everything from taking care of the dogs, cut wood, fetching water and cooking. During this adventure you will have a good chance of seeing the Northern lights and if we are lucky we might see some of the wild animals in the area or at least their tracks. The animals moving around here are moose, reindeer, wolverine, lynx, hare and different kind of birds like ptarmigan and capercaillie.

Itinerary:

Day 1 - Welcome to Saltoluokta Mountain Station

Saltoluokta mountain station is located roadless with a beautiful setting right on the Kungsleden, the King’s trail. The main building was built in 1918 and is still intact with a lot of the original furnishing.
We meet in the evening for dinner in the charming restaurant. After dinner we will go through the gear and you will get your clothes and shoes. For anyone who arrives earlier in the day we have snowshoes that you can borrow if you would like to check out the surroundings.

Day 2 – Heading south on the King’s Trail
After breakfast we introduce you to the huskies, pack up our sleds give you instructions in how to drive a dog sled and handle the dogs. Then it’s time to get the harnesses on the dogs and take off.
We start out south along the King’s Trail with a steep climb up from the valley of river Stora Luleälven. It’s hard work uphill with our fully loaded sleds but pretty soon we will reach the timber line and we will get a rewarding view. Most of the day we will travel in tundra-like terrain over the bare mountain and we will stop for lunch somewhere along the way where we find a suitable place.
After 20 km we will arrive to the Sitojaure cabin where we going to spend our night.

Day 3 - The gate of Sarek National Park

Today we’ll follow the Sito River valley downstream and our goal is the cabins in Aktse.
At first the marked winter trail mostly goes over frozen lakes and through mountain birch forest. Gradually, the forest changes from windblown spruce to old pine trees. Like all days we have an outdoor lunch.
After approx 42 km we will reach Aktse which is an old mountain homestead where settlers and hunters lived since ancient times and is beautifully located with a view of the famous “Gate of Sarek National Park.

Day 4 – Rittakvalley and Pårte

Our journey continues south along the King’s Trail. The trail goes mostly over lakes and mires, but also through old mountain forest. All the time with the mountains in our view.
In the afternoon we reach the Pårte cabin located on a beautiful little peninsula. The valley Rittakdalen has true wilderness character with old forest and mountains
rising around it. Approx 30km

Day 5 – Årrenjarka, the small mountain village

Today we stear our dog teams Down to Kvikkjokk, a small village by the end of the road. From here we will then leave the King’s Trail and travel through Kivkkjokks delta and then follow the marked trail on lake Saggat to the small mountain village Årrenjarka. Here we will have a tasty dinner in their beautiful restaurant and enjoy the luxury of showers and sauna.

Day 6 – The Pearl River Nature Reserve

After our comfy night in Årrenjarka we turn our heads toward west and travel through the Pearl River Nature Reserve. It will be a long day of 50 km and we run many kilometers on the big lakes Peuraure and Karats. Long lakes with old beautiful old forests and low mountains. An area with a great wilderness feeling. Night will be spent in a small cabin on the island Laxholmen at lake Karats.

Day 7 – Jouksaure cabin

From the lake Karats we continue our journey along the Karats trail. The trail goes along lakes, through forests and frozen wetlands. Now we will reach an area where there usually are elks during this time of the year. But nature is nature and the wild animals usually try to stay away from people so we need a bit of luck if we should be able to see them. In end of the day, we will drive to the small Juoksaure cabin located by a small river.

Day 8 – Jokkmokk, back to civilisation

We start from Juoksaure and travel the last 30 km to our kennel and home just outside Jokkmokk. We will follow the lower part of the Pearlriver down to lake Purkijaure that is a part of the river Lilla Luleälven. Finally, we’ll reach the kennel and you will get to see how the dogs live back home. After the tour we’ll take you to the cozy Åsgård Guest House where you can enjoy a warm shower before a final dinner.
