A 7 days self-guided canoe trip along the river valley from the beautiful mountains in Kvikkjokk to Jokkmokk woodlands in the east. Many hiking trails connects in Kvikkjokk and the King’s Trail – Kungsleden pass by here so it’s perfect if you like to end your hiking tour and then canoeing down to Jokkmokk.

Small villages are situated around the lakes and settlers has lived here since the beginning of the 1600 century. Sámi people already were already here and lived from reindeer keeping, hunting and fishing. If you go further back in time there is ancient remains from 6000-year-old hunting societies. This is a wilderness area with a changing and vibrant culture since ages ago.

This paddle route is a suitable tour for you who like to experience the wilderness of Swedish Lapland without feeling all alone. You can paddle for days without seeing anyone but you are not far away from help if you should need it. There is mobile phone coverage on several places along the river valley but not everywhere. You’re travelling on big waters so you need to be aware that it can blow up quickly and high waves may occur so be careful and always paddle close to shore.
There are 3 portages along the way. On all three of them you can use the canoe cart.

The route on Google Maps: Jokkmokk-Kvikkjokk

STAGE 1: KVIKKJOKK TO NJAVVE
You start your paddling in Kvikkjokk and lake Saggat and paddle your way down east. For the most wilderness feeling, we recommend you follow the south side of the lake.
Lake Saggat is a big lake and as with all big lakes in Lapland high waves can appear when it’s windy. By hard north or northwest winds you shall stay on shore and wait until it’s settling down. Usually, it calms down in the evening and at night.
A little further down Saggat you will pass Årrenjarka Fjällby, but which is on the north side of the lake. You paddle on and where the lake narrows you cross over to the north side and make your way to the small boat house in Roavvanjárgga and lift the canoe up and walk past the small village of Njavve. Here you come close to the Kvikkjokk road and the portage with a canoe cart is easy to Tjåmotisjaure where you can start paddling again (see the map).
ATTENTION!! It is really important that you don't paddle too far past the boat house in Roavvanjárgga and get dragged down the rapids. You are absolutely not allowed to paddle this section with rapids! Rapids should only be paddled by those who have the right training and a lot of experience in reading whitewater, AND have the right safety equipment. The equipment and canoes from us are NOT made for whitewater rapids.

STAGE 2: TJÅMOTISJAURE AND SKALKA
After you have put in the canoe in the bay after the village of Njavve, you will paddle a longer distance along some long narrow lakes. We recommend you go over to the south side of the lake for the best nature feeling. Beware! In some places, large stones can lie hidden under the water’s surface.

STAGE 3: PARKIJAURE
At the end of lake Skalka you arrive at Björkholmen and make your way through the narrow passage over to the next lake, Parkijaure. You have to be careful in the passage, because here the water can sometimes flow quite fast depending on the water levels in the lakes.
You then paddle the entire lake until a bit before the Parkijaure dam where you pick up the canoe for another portage with the canoe cart.
ATTENTION! Do NOT paddle close to the dam because strong currents appear when the dam hatches open and close.
On the north side of the dam you follow the small road (see the map) and walk to lake Randijaure.

STAGE 4: RANDIJAURE
Lake Randijaure is a big and beautiful lake with nice nature along the lake’s south side. You paddle the entire lake until a bit before the dam for the third and final portage.
Again, don’t paddle too close to the dam! Take up the canoe and follow the small gravel road over to Gladvik and lake Purkijaure (see map).

STAGE 5: PURKIJAURE
Purkijaure is a beautiful and shallow lake and during the warmer periods of the summer the water temperatures often go up to +25 C. There are many nice camping spots around this lake.
It is nice to paddle along the shores of the island of Tallholmen. From Tallholmen's eastern cape, you continue to paddle the last short stretch to the pick-up point where the car road passes over the water in Brändön.
