Already over 400 years ago people in the north gathered around Jokkmokk to trade fur, silver and other necessities and in 1605 Jokkmokk Winter Market established. The market is still a yearly event and has developed to a festival including the market, exhibitions and lectures about the nature and culture of the north.

We have put together the gems of Jokkmokk Winter Market in a holiday package including accommodation in cozy cabins just outside Jokkmokk with activities in and outside the town and transfer to and from Jokkmokk from Luleå.
Learn about the Sámi culture and meet reindeers and go on a tour with snow mobile with chance to see 
the northern lights. Experience the feeling silently travel through the winter landscape behind a team of sled dogs, follow on wildlife watching in search of the great Sarek moose and go on a food workshop. You will also have time to on your own explore the market place with its great range of handicraft, food, art but also exhibitions, lectures and concerts. We will guide you to a complete experience of the Jokkmokk Winter Market.
We work with local activity companies who have good knowledge of the culture and history in the area. You will also have access to a host that will help you and who can make recommendations of activities to do on your own, based on your wishes and interests.

For Who?

You need to be able to walk and move in snow and uneven terrain and on your own step in and out of a snowmobile sled (big step) and be able to sit on the ground with your legs crossed or stretched in front of you.
You also need to be able to sit on a dog sled, which is like a bench where you need to have your legs wide apart on each side and bent 90 degrees.

Accommodation and Food

Accommodation in cabins at Arctic Camp, located just 3 km from Jokkmokk and the market place. 
Modern cabins with two bedrooms. Stay in a double room, or part of twin bed room with a bunk bed, or you can book a single room for an extra fee. Shared kitchen and bathroom with showers in the cabins. Access to sauna. Free wifi.

When you are here we want you to try the local food that northern Sweden has to offer. 
Full board is included except for one lunch, where you can buy something from one of the temporary restaurants at the market place. In the evenings we visit different restaurants in town where you are served dinner cooked on local ingredients. A lighter lunch is included in your activities but during the market day you buy lunch yourself at the marketplace.

Guides and Activities

We work with local guides and activity companies with good knowledge of the areas culture and history.
You will also have access to a host who can make recommendations of activities to do on your own, based on your wishes and interests.

This holiday package is arranged in collaboration with Laponia Adventures, a guide company in Lapland, which organizes tours and expeditions in the world heritage Laponia. It is one of them that will be your local host during the week.

Pick-up outside the train station building at 9:00 on Feb 3rd for transport to Jokkmokk.
On the 8th Feb you will be back at Luleå train station at 12:00.

How to get to Luleå?
Travel to Luleå by train or bus. You can also fly to Luleå Airport just outside town and take the transfer to town or a taxi directly to the train station.

What happens if I miss the pickup in Luleå?
We can not guarantee that we can wait for delayed trains or flights.
To not risk to miss the pickup if your flight/train should get delayed we recommend that you book an extra night in Luleå 
the night before pick-up.
Note! If you miss the pickup you will need to arrange your own transport to Jokkmokk. 

ITINERARY

Day 1 – Pickup Luleå and Dog Sled tour in Jokkmokk (L, D)

You will be picked you up outside the train station building in Luleå at 9:00 and drive to Jokkmokk. Jokkmokk is a small town just north of the Arctic Circle where the population multiplies every year at the Jokkmokk winter market. After arriving to Jokkmokk we have lunch together and after lunch those of you who have rented winter clothing get to try out your clothes and boots before it’s time for the first activity of this week. 
Meet us, Matti & Stina at our sled dog kennel. You will meet our friendly huskies and go out on a dog sled tour experiencing the winter landscape around Jokkmokk. While the sun is setting we stop to barbecue pork, sausages (vegetarian option available) and boil coffee over an open fire and you will get some time to socialize and cuddle with the dogs.

In the evening you will enjoy a dinner together and you get the possibility to get to know each other and your host and guide for your stay. Your host will also brief you on the upcoming program for the week and answer your questions.

Tips! To not risk to miss the pickup if you flight/train should get delayed we recommend that you arrive to book an extra night in Lulea. There you can take a walk on the ice-road or just relax before we pick you up.

Day 2 - Sámi Experience, Jokkmokk Market Open Ceremony and Northern lights tour (B, L, D) 

We start the day with breakfast. Today you will visit our friend Anna Kuhmunen who comes from a local reindeer herding family. You will get a chance to listen to stories from her life and culture, meet their reindeers and taste traditional Sámi food.
In the afternoon you will have some time on your own to either explore the town or visit Ájtte – principal museum of Sami 
Culture and the Mountain region, which we highly recommend.

During the day Jokkmokk have slowly started to transform into a market place and in the late afternoon it’s the opening ceremony of the Jokkmokk Winter Market.
After the 
inauguration a snowmobile will take you on a northern lights tour and drive you outside Jokkmokk, where we have dinner together in a heated tent and glance to the sky, hoping to see  the Northern Lights.

Note! The activities during day 2-5 can be switched around depending on the size of the group and weather conditions. 

Day 3 – Full day at Jokkmokk Winter Market (B,D)

In the morning your host will present some highlight from the winter market before you go out and explore it on your own. The market has a great range of art and handicraft but also exhibitions, lectures and concerts. Lunch will be on your own at the market which offers a lot of options.

In the evening we have booked a table at one of the local restaurants in Jokkmokk.

Day 4 – Day at the Market and Food Workshop (B, L, D)

Start the day by spending more time at Jokkmokk Market. By lunch we meet and will go for a food workshop with Caisa. Caisa has a big passion for traditional and local food and together with her you will learn how to cook a traditional Jokkmokk meal. After lunch you have the opportunity to explore more of the eventful market before we eat dinner at a restaurant.

Day 5 - Searching for the Sarek moose and Jokkmokk Winter Market (B, L, D)

After breakfast you will head out with minibuses searching for the great Sarek moose. Protected from the yearly hunting season the Sarek moose grow bigger than its relatives. In the winter, they migrate down to the forest area east of Sarek National Park where they find food and protection from the harsh environment in the mountain. We take you to some of the moose’s favorite places.
Later in the afternoon there are more time to visit the market before we gather for final dinner together at one of Jokkmokk’s restaurants.

Day 6 - Departure from Jokkmokk (B)

After breakfast it’s time to head back to Luleå. 
You will be back at Luleå train station at 12.00.

Nature is a dynamic place and we may need to adjust the itinerary according to the current weather. We are also in contact with the local reindeer herders and other local actors to collaborate in the best way possible.
